The PACE MySteps program is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project funded by the National Cancer Institute, and is designed for adolescents ages 12-16 who are overweight or at risk for becoming overweight. It is a year-long Web-based program with weekly content on key nutrition and physical activity behaviors, as well as self-monitoring and goal-setting functions. The program’s target behaviors are increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber, decreasing dietary fat consumption, increasing total activity (moderate, vigorous or lifestyle), and decreasing sedentary time.

Because the MySteps program encourages increasing the number of daily steps, all participants receive a pedometer to help them track daily steps, and can transfer their pedometer information directly to the MySteps web site, by using an included OMRON Walking Style pedometer and proprietary software only available with MySteps. Further, MySteps includes a full year program designed specifically for the teen’s parent or guardian, to help them effectively support their child in making healthful changes. The end goal of this SBIR work is to commercially offer an effective, evidence-based program to assist at-risk, overweight and obese teens with sound weight management skills and development of healthful diet and activity habits. PACEiMoM – PACEinternet for Moms on the Move is is a 2½ year Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) study funded by the National Institute for Child and Human Development. Its focus is developing and testing a web & cell phone-based weight control intervention that physicians can offer to overweight post-partum women. PACEiMoM will target women classified as overweight to Level 1 Obese (BMI of 25 -34.9 for age/gender NIH, 1998) at 4 to 8 weeks post-delivery, who are able to do moderate intensity physical activity such as walking. Behavioral targets are: decreasing dietary fat intake; increasing fruit, vegetable and fiber intake; and increasing overall physical activity. iMoM will be based on empirically supported PACE approaches to health behavior change that have been evaluated for more than a decade, and will thoroughly informed by focus groups with recent mothers and providers of obstetrical care.

The resulting iMoM product will be a 12-month online program with integrated cell phone messaging and uploadable pedometer components, tailored to help new mothers reach and maintain a healthful weight. The efficacy of the program will be tested through a randomized controlled trial among 154 post-partum women. The primary outcome will be the effect of PACEiMoM onweight (in kg) at 12 months. Secondary outcomes include: a) weight at 6 months; b) objective (accelerometer) and self-report measures of physical activity and eating behaviors at 6 and 12months; and satisfaction data from women who use the iMoM intervention program. The end goal of this SBIR work is to have a commercially available, effective, evidence-based program to teach overweight post partum mothers sound weight loss strategies and long term, well-balanced weight maintenance habits.

The PACE Men-in-Motion program is a Web-based program designed for overweight men ages 18-55 years, and focuses on helping men to make improvements in cardiovascular fitness, strength, fruit, vegetable and whole grains consumption, while decreasing consumption of saturated dietary fats. The program offers 12 months of online content and has been especially well-received by men who value the flexibility and convenience of a tailored program which they can log into from home or work. In addition to the online nutrition, activity and behavior change skills content, the Men in Motion program also offers individualized real-time e-counseling, for men who seek additional guidance in problem-solving barriers to meeting their health goals.
