PACE Training/Consultation

Training

Training for providers on how to use PACE materials is available on a consultation basis through the Center for Health Interventions and Technology (CHIAT). We know from experience that providing one training alone is not adequate. Providers need support after the training is completed to tailor the PACE program to their particular clinical setting. We made the PACE process flexible for this reason. There are three components to PACE training:
  1. Preparation and tailoring of the training: We will DISCUSS WITH YOU IN ADVANCE HOW TO tailor the training to meet your clinical needs.

  2. The training itself: We like to train no more than 25 providers (MD, NP, RN, health educators, your fitness staff, etc.) in one training. We like to invite one of the office staff from each setting represented as well (up to 25 support staff). They are trained over a 3-4 hour period by two PACE faculty (at least one principal trainer). The second half of the day is spent with one person from each office or setting or region who would like to be the "PACE coordinator". That person will be trained by us on how to follow-up with providers and office staff to ensure successful adoption of the program into the clinical practice. This is a very crucial role.

  3. Follow-up consultation. There are many questions, which arise after the training. Since we have trained so many varied sites how to do PACE counseling, we have a lot of experience getting around roadblocks. We use the follow-up consultation time to advise you about how to assist providers after they have started using the PACE program. This follow-up time can also be used to consult on evaluation of PACE in your setting or to help you bridge the gap between your clinical setting and other resources in your area. The PACE training can be conducted in a shorter format, by arrangement.
Objectives of PACE Trainings - After attending a PACE training, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the importance of physical activity and healthful eating for health maintenance
  • Identify barriers to health promotion counseling in primary care and ways to overcome them
  • Explain the empirical basis for PACE physical activity and nutrition counseling
  • Use PACE assessment, counseling protocols, and supporting materials to counsel patients effectively
  • Provide brief counseling tailored to a patient's stage of change
  • Select patients for whom PACE counseling is appropriate
  • Describe a plan for implementing the PACE program in clinical practice
